The Young Spinner Makes Surprise Selection in England's Ashes Team

The English team has opted for a twelve-player squad just two days ahead of the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir earning a surprise place.

The 22-year-old’s selection indicates that the tourists will wait until the morning of the first Test to decide whether Perth Stadium pitch suit four seamers or the addition of a spinner.

Both pace bowlers are part of the 12-man squad, indicating there are no doubts about their pace bowler’s fitness.

The other seamers complete the bowling group, with the latter expected to be omitted if Bashir makes the starting XI.

Ground Conditions Favor Seamers

The England coach had been expected to choose an pace-only lineup on a venue that has staged several past matches.

During these games, the majority of dismissals have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.

Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken the bulk, while all visiting spinners together have only eight.

On a ground known for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, pledged that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team loaded with seamers remains the probable decision.

Spin Options Considered

There had been rumors that Will Jacks could be brought into the side to provide some slow bowling while also strengthening the batting lineup.

However the coach has chosen to stick with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the series.

Earlier, Nathan Lyon commented on the English spinner as “decent,” saying that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still the English top slow bowler.”

“It is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for people who lack experience in the previous in these conditions,” he said of spin bowling in Australian Tests.

“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so they perform and perform well out here.”
