The president-elect of the Oxford Union has been ousted from office after failing a vote of confidence that followed his controversial social media posts about the conservative activist.

The motion against the student leader achieved the required super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the organization.

Disputed Comments

The controversy began after the student reportedly shared messages on online platforms that appeared to celebrate the death of the American conservative figure, who was fatally shot while speaking at a college in Utah.

According to sources, one social media message reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the phrase 'lol'.

The student leader is also reported to have written in a messaging group with fellow students appearing to express approval of the event.

Vote Outcome

The vote of confidence took place over the weekend, with results revealed on Tuesday.

Official notices indicated that over twelve hundred votes were cast supporting removal, while just over five hundred were opposed the motion.

The notice stated that the president-elect was deemed to have stepped down in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.

Election Controversies

Voting operations were informally suspended early on Monday after the returning officer was reportedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from several representatives.

In a statement, the student asserted that the vote tally had been halted because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of process errors".

His statement unequivocally denied that any person appointed by George had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.

Continuing Controversy

The student stated that extremely serious issues had been referred to the disciplinary committee and that he remained president-elect.

His statement added that George was "grateful and honored to have the support of significantly more than half of students at Oxford" who voted to have a "secure voting process and resist attempts to subvert democracy".

Critics have argued that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the Oxford Union has chosen ideology over integrity".

External Reactions

On recently, Mikey McCoy presented an open letter to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show broadcast.

The letter accused the society of becoming a place where "student leaders publicly celebrate the killing of a ideological rival".

The statement warned that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, Kirk's allies would "personally contact every American political speaker who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".

The Oxford Union had previously criticized Mr Abaraonye's remarks after the activist's killing and stated that complaints submitted about him had been referred for official review.

The student leader had been one of multiple members to debate with the activist at the society in spring.
