Pat Bamford Signs With Sheffield United Despite Initiating Abusive Chants Targeting Coach Wilder
The striker has signed with Sheffield United only half a year following leading disrespectful songs targeting their manager, Wilder.
This experienced striker, a free agent after departing from Leeds United, has agreed to a contract joining the Championship strugglers until January. Bamford's lengthy time at Elland Road was ended by mutual consent in August.
One of Bamford’s final notable acts as a Leeds player included starting offensive songs about Chris Wilder amid the club’s promotion party this spring. Now, the former England player will be playing for Wilder as Sheffield United's boss seeks to pull the team he loves out of the relegation zone.
Previous History Involving Bamford and Wilder
The pair had a past prior to Leeds won promotion to the top flight last season and United lost the promotion decider by Sunderland. Wilder described Bamford as “a muppet” when the roles were reversed in 2018-19 and Sheffield United secured direct promotion while Leeds missed out in the promotion playoffs.
Making Amends and Moving Forward
All appears has been resolved with United, the Championship’s lowest scorers, urgently requiring of improvement in attack while Bamford hoping to rejuvenate his career.
The Wilder chant spread widely in April. An apologetic Bamford along with Leeds boss, Daniel Farke, called the Sheffield United manager the following day.
Wilder said at the time: “Had a conversation with Pat recently and I have no issue whatsoever with that. I'm uncertain regarding the words used from a fellow pro! But I valued and respected him giving me a call.
“We had 20 minutes and the same again I spoke to Daniel Farke as well and we had a half-hour chat together and he's a great person, a top guy. When I was playing we used to dish it out and take it and that’s an integral part of the game across all levels, including Sunday league. I have no problem at all. I'm fine with it and I told him that to Patrick.”
Latest Playing Challenges
Bamford featured in 18 appearances with Leeds United in the previous campaign but the ex- Nottingham Forest, Chelsea FC and Boro striker has struggled with fitness issues in recent years.
