Oklahoma City Thunder Begin Title Defense with Nail-Biting Overtime Win

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in action

The Thunder star joined Oklahoma City back in 2019.

The Thunder's star player scored the game-winning points deep into a second overtime period as the defending champions opened their NBA title defense with a narrow victory over the visiting Rockets.

The reigning MVP scored a team-high 35 points, featuring two from the free-throw line with just 2.3 seconds left in double OT, giving the titleholders a winning beginning.

The Rockets' big man led all scorers with a game-high 39 and also connected on a personal-best five three-pointers.

But Chet Holmgren, who contributed 28 points, played a major role together with match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.

"Determination and defense," SGA commented of their showing. "We know that when we do it defensively we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—shots, missed attempts, fortune or bad luck. We did enough defence to get the win. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a good start."

Prior to the tip-off, Oklahoma's title banner was unveiled at their home court, while the squad were awarded their championship rings.

The Thunder beat the Indiana Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their maiden championship since the franchise relocated in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 crown.

Indiana will have the opportunity to get some payback on this Friday when they host the Thunder, while the Rockets return to action on the same day at the Pistons.

In other action, a huge performance of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine dimes from Luka Doncic was not enough to stop his current team the Lakers from suffering a 119-109 defeat against the Warriors.

Miami's star scored 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter added 23 for the road team.

The Lakers were missing the league's top scorer LeBron James as he is recovering from sciatica.
