Labuschagne Dropped from Australian ODI Team Against India
Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the three-match ODI series against India, as high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw earning a surprise inclusion.
Performance Issues Lead to Exclusion
Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the one-day international side after managing only a single run in both of his innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a top score of forty-seven in his most recent ten ODI batting appearances.
The batsman has played 68 ODIs and amassed 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now work towards a Test team comeback ahead of the Ashes beginning in Perth on November 21.
Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Changes
Recent performances suggest of a improvement in form with 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw also hit a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
The left-hander may to make his first white-ball appearance in the forthcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.
He has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also seeking a return to the Test team as Australia seek a answer to their top-order woes.
Pace Additions and Fitness Updates
Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after being rested since performing well for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen may earn his ODI debut after being concussed in the lead up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.
ODI captain Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he aims to recover from a back injury in time to lead Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.
Squad Selection Approach and Fixtures
Australia have announced a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-match series due to a wrist problem suffered in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 sides after smashing a century in the last match against New Zealand to secure a 2-0 series win last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be some management through the back end of the series as players get ready for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the preparation for the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously get ready certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India commences on October 19 in Perth, before the opponents play five T20 internationals from 29 October.
