England's Assistant Coach Explains The Vision: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

A decade ago, Anthony Barry featured at a lower division club. Now, he's dedicated on helping the England manager claim the World Cup trophy in 2026. His journey from athlete to trainer began through volunteering with the youth team. He recalls, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He realized his destiny.

Staggering Ascent

The coach's journey is incredible. Starting in a senior role at Wigan, he developed a name for innovative drills and excellent people skills. His club career included elite sides, while also serving in roles with national teams with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with legends including top footballers. Now, with England, it’s full-time, the top as he describes it.

“Dreams are the starting point … But I’m a believer that obsession can move mountains. You envision the goal and then you plan: ‘What's the process, each day, each phase?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. It's essential to develop a systematic approach that allows us for optimal success.”

Detail-Oriented Approach

Obsession, particularly on fine points, defines Barry’s story. Toiling around the clock all the time, the coaching duo challenge limits. Their methods involve psychological profiling, a heat-proof game model for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and building a true team. He stresses the national team spirit and dislikes phrases like “international break”.

“It's not time off or a rest,” Barry notes. “We had to build something where players are eager to join and, secondly, they feel so stretched that it’s a breather.”

Greedy Coaches

The assistant coach says and Tuchel as highly ambitious. “We aim to control each element of play,” he declares. “We seek to command the whole ground and we dedicate most of our time to. It’s our job not just to keep up of changes and to lead and create our own ones. It's an ongoing effort with a mindset of solving issues. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We get 50 days alongside the squad before the World Cup finals. We have to play a complex game for a tactical edge and we have to make it so clear in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from idea to information to know-how to performance.

“To develop a process that allows us to be productive during the limited time, we must utilize all the time available after our appointment. During periods without the team, it's vital to develop bonds among them. We have to spend time on the phone with them, we have to see them in stadiums, sense their presence. Relying only on those 50 days, we have no chance.”

World Cup Qualifiers

The coach is focusing ahead of the concluding matches in the qualifying campaign – facing Serbia at home and in Albania. England have guaranteed qualification after six consecutive victories with perfect defensive records. But there will be no easing off; instead. This period to build on the team's style, for further momentum.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the football philosophy must reflect all the positives about the Premier League,” he comments. “The fitness, the adaptability, the robustness, the honesty. The national team shirt should be harder than ever to get yet easy to carry. It must resemble a cloak instead of heavy armour.

“To make it light, we have to give them a system that lets them to play freely as they do in club games, that connects with them and encourages attacking play. They must be stuck less in thinking and more in doing.

“There are emotional wins available to trainers at both ends of the pitch – starting moves deep, attacking high up. Yet, in the central zone in that part of the ground, we believe play has stagnated, notably in domestic leagues. Coaches have extensive data these days. They understand tactics – structured defenses. We are focusing to speed up play through midfield.”

Passion for Progress

The coach's thirst for improvement knows no bounds. During his education for his pro license, he had concerns regarding the final talk, especially as his class included stars such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he sought out difficult settings imaginable to practise giving them. Including a prison locally, where he also took inmates in a football drill.

He completed the course with top honors, and his research paper – about dead-ball situations, for which he analysed numerous set-plays – was published. Frank was one of those impressed and he brought Barry to his team with the Blues. When Lampard was sacked, it said plenty that Chelsea removed virtually all of his coaches while keeping Barry.

The next manager at Stamford Bridge was Tuchel, and shortly after, he and Barry won the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, Barry remained in the setup. But when Tuchel re-emerged at Munich, he got Barry out from Chelsea and back alongside him. The FA view them as a partnership like previous management pairs.
